October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- Be aware of your breasts! :)

But, seriously...

Someone sent me this email that was supposed to be inspiring... It bothers me greatly.  Here it is:

Frank shared that his wife suffered from breast cancer. She had to take a lot of pain and live through it. Would you believe it folks that she never told anyone about her illness? Yes, neither her family nor Frank knew of her illness until the ultimate stages. She bore the excruciating pain alone and never let anyone know about it lest they worry about her. She said to Frank on her death-bed that she wanted to live her life normally with her family. She was sure that doctors and medicines cannot give her the comfort that the smiles of her family could. I salute this woman for her incredible courage and strength. October is the Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it's time we become aware of this deadly disease. Studies show that most women suffering from this disease don't recognize the symptoms till it escalates to a complicated stage. I would like all my readers to note that ignoring illness doesn't cure it, it only makes it worse. Make sure you're getting your mammograms and self-examinations. Talk to your doctor and even if you are not over forty, you should still check with your doctor at least once a year, if not every six months.

The only part of this email that is inspiring to me is reminding people that we DON'T HAVE TO LIVE WITH CANCER.  Cancer is curable.  I don't know the exact circumstances of this woman's stages and health, but most breast cancer can be cut out, reconstruct the breasts, go through chemotherapy and radiation and you have a great chance for survival.  BUT, YOU HAVE TO GET A MAMMOGRAM.  If you are 35 or older, female, the next time you are at your gynocologist's office, get a breast exam and ask for a mammogram.  They can give you suggestions on where to go for free if you don't have insurance.  In Orange County, you call (800) 511-2300
Monday - Friday
from 8:30am - 5pm.  See if you qualify.

Do it for yourself.
Do it for your family,
every year.

If you are female and over 40 years old, you have a one in eight chance of getting breast cancer.  Catch it early!

If there is one thing I regret for myself, it is that I didn't have the guts to go get my mammogram when I first felt the lump.   I waited about one and a half years.  This caused the lump to go from stage 1 to stage 3.  If I ignored it more, it would have gone to a point where I may not have lived through this.

If I say anything inspirational here, it is that ALL of this treatment, the mastectomy, the reconstruction, the chemo, is not that bad. I've serioulsy had worse health conditions. Sometimes I think my pnemonia I had was worse to get over. But, just like with pnemonia, you gotta do what the doctors say and take all the medicine, not just until you feel better. The point is to get well. Forever.

Okay, I am off my soapbox.  When people say, "why me?" I say, "Why not me?"  Why not you?  So go take care of your health.

I Love you all and thank you for keeping up on my treatment.

Julie
